Australians win rules
One of the closest Australian Rules matches seen in New Zealand resulted in a loss by Canterbury at Wainoni Park on Sunday. Never more than a goal separated the teams when the visiting team from the ship H.M.A.S. Jervis Bay beat Canterbury by eight goals and 13 behinds (61 points) to eight goals and 12 behinds (60).
It was a very fast game, played in great spirit and marked by a number of tremendous bumps. The outstanding Canterbury players were Garry Gardner, showing the benefits of his recent trip to Adelaide, Angelo Dipace and Gary Proud, with Dipace, Shane Chivers and Grant Paynter the leading scorers.
Mr John Wain, the Australian Consul-General in Christchurch, opened the season with the bounce-up.
