1080 poison
Sir, — I read Oliver Riddell’s article on 1080 poison. I believe that there is no safe way to apply a poison as deadly as 1080. The Forest Service knowing full well that there is no known antidote, continues to dump hundreds of tonnes of 1080 poison every year all over New Zealand. About one month ago, one of the North Canterbury pest destruction councils called tenders for the dropping of 200 tonnes of 1080-poisoned carrot. How many birds and insects can you kill with that? No doubt the pest destruction council concerned will be able to tell us in the near future. The Forest Service has been experimenting with 1080 as an opossum killer for more than 20 years, which would appear to be a very long and expensive experiment. How much more experimenting can our wildlife stand? — Yours, etc., LAURIE COLLINS. April 2, 1978.
