Amco Cup debut
Considerable interest will be taken in Wellington’s debut in the very lucrative Amco Cup k n o c k-out tournament against the New South Wales country district, lllawarra, at Wollongong today. Wellington replaced Canterbury as the second New Zealand representative in the Amco draw as a reward for its filling the runner-up position behind Auckland in the 1977 national Rothmans inter-pro-vincial contest. Canterbury had good reason to rue its 21-20 loss to Wellington in the Rothmans semifinal.
The Illawarra division has produced many outstanding players, among them Graeme Langlands and Bobby Fulton, and has a reservoir of powerful footballers on call from rhe vasf Port Kembla steelworks and the coal mines around Wollongong. Many New Zealanders have spent part of their careers in the Illawarra competition, including the former Kiwi forwards, Oscar Danielson, Eddie Moore, Bill Burgoyne and Doug Gailey.
