Waiouru welcome
Major Albert Kiwi, of Burnham, and his dog, Freefall, reached Waiouru yesterday on their run
from Bluff to Cape Reinga to raise funds for the proposed Army memorial museum. Waiouru, the township where the museum will be built, turned on a special welcome and the news came yesterday that sponsorship for the run now stood at $10,700. This does not include donations collected on the way. In Wellington last Friday, for instance, as Major Kiwi ran from Army headquarters to Waikanae, relays of Army runners accompanying him
collected more than $l7OO from pedestrians, motorists, and residents along the route. Although yesterday’s run was a short one to coincide with the special arrangements at Waiouru, Major Kiwi has maintained a steady pace since he left Bluff on February 24. Sunday’s run covered 96 kilometres. By the time he completes his run, Major Kiwi hopes to have raised $lOO,OOO in pledges and donations for the museum.
