The Christchurch. Central branch of the Values Party has postponed the selection of its candidate for this vear's General Election until March 22.

A selection meeting was I told that one of the nominees, I a secondary school teacher, .would be required under the | Electoral Amendment Act, 1977, to take leave without , pay for more than five weeks over the election period. , A branch spokesman said 'that at the time of the last General Election school boards had had discretionary powers to continue employing candidates if they were taking examination classes, but that the new act allowed no such discretion. "The nominee in question would face a bill of approximately $BOO in order to stand in the 1978 General Election. Oher teachers could well face a higher monetary penalty if they are to stand," 'the spokesman said. “Under the circumstances, the branch decided to grant its nominees further time to consider their personal positions more closely,” he said.
