Slack sale at art auction
There was a sluggish demand for New Zealand paintings of the turn of the century at an art auction in Wellington on Saturday. Paintings by H. W. Kirkwood and A. H. O’Keefe were most in demand, with a top price of $375 for an O’Keefe landscape oil. An M. O. Stoddart watercolour of the Heathcote River made $2BO, and works by Cedric Savage and Nugent Welch sold for more than $2OO. A Raymond McIntyre portrait fetched $3OO. The poor demand contrasted with the buoyant demand for nineteenth century works at an auction only three weeks ago.
