Carter warning on Yugoslavia
NZPA-Reuter Washington President Carter of the United States delivered a thinly-veiled warning to the Soviet Union to stay out of Yugoslavia yesterday when he welcomed President Tito to the White House. Marshal Tito, the first com. munist leader to visit Washington since Mr Carter took i office nearly 14 months ago, 1 was hailed as a true friend < of the United States. The President, reported by officials to be interested in ’ exploring Yugoslavia’s i course after the 85-year-old Marshal , Tito leaves the i scene, said: “The indepen- I dence and integrity of Yugoslavia is one of the basic ’
foundations of world peace now and in the futur- ” A White House spokesman later told reporters: “We have a commitment to sups port Yugoslavia’s independence and integrity.” Asked how that commitment would be fulfilled if the Soviet Union invaded Yugoslavia, the spokesman said the question was a hypothetical one which could not be answered at a White House press briefing. The question was posed in view of a statement by Mr Carter before his November, 1976, election that he would) not favour the use of United States troops to aid Yugoslavia in the event of a Soviet attack.
