Strong winds upset rowing
PA Lake Karapiro Strong cross-winds gusting through an exposed section around the 1000 m mark on the Lake Karapiro course yesterday wiped almost twothirds of the scheduled races at the national rowing championships. The 31 elimination heats and 11 repechage heats that should have been rowed yesterday will now have to be slotted into today’s and tomorrow’s programme, with racing getting under way at the early time of 7 a.m. today. The men’s singles heats gave little indication of the likely champion, with the two Whakatane favourites. John Alexander and Grant McAuley, both winning their heats to go straight into the semi-finals. CHAMPIONSHIP Single sculls Heat one: Cambridge (P. Britton). 8:0.8, 1; Auckland No. 1 (M. Kyff) 2.
