Authors to talk of craft

New Zealand fiction will be dissected and prognosticated upon by some of New Zealand’s worthiest writers and critics at the weekend.

M. K. Joseph, author of “A Soldiers Tale,” Maurice Shadbolt, of “Strangers and Journeys,” and C. K. Stead, of “Smith’s Dream, ’ will come down from Auckland. With them will be lan Mune. of “Sleeping Dogs,” the film adaptation of Stead’s novel.

Also speaking at the symposium will be Vincent O’Sullivan, from Hamilton; Maurice Gee from Nelson; and O. D. Middleton, from Dunedin; Peter Smart, editor of “Landfall,” and the critics Cherry Hankin and Patrick Evans. On Saturday they will examine New Zealand fiction in the seventies, interview Maurice Shadbolt, and discuss the New Zealand short story. A panel will discuss

“Whatever happened to the

avant-garde.” Sunday afternoon will be devoted to adapting novels for film, and publishing.

The symposium will be held in the Town Hal] Conference Room, which holds 350 people.

An associated event will be an exhibition of contemporary New Zealand fiction at the University of Canterbury library.
