Festival sales boom
Bookings have bolted, says the Arts Festival office. The most popular show now appears to be the festival opera “Orfeo ed Euridice.” On Thursday 83 booked, yesterday 250. The Town Hall booking office says bookings were heavy all day yesterday. With four or five ticket clerks busy at the counter, queues of at least four or five people were always waiting. Festival Jazz is proving to be another big draw. Ninety-six people booked last Thursday, yesterday
more than 200. The venue was switched from the James Hay Theatre to the auditorium because of demand. The Court Theatre production “She Stoops to Conquer,” Oliver Goldsmith’s comedy of mistaken identities, has “very few reasonable seats left” on that half of the box plan held by the Town Hall. The Court Theatre holds the other half. Bookings for “Steptoe and Son” in the second week are also picking up, Town Hall reports.
The booking office says that patrons are unaware of the special counter for door sales just before performances. People wanting tickets for shows just about to start have been getting into booking queues for other shows, and have had to be redirected by bookings staff to the right counter. The experience is a “bit of an ordeal,” especially for the elderly. The door sales counter is the one nearest Kilmore Street, and is clearly marked.
