M.E.D. plans to build
The Municipal Electricity Department wants Christchurch City Council approval for a $392,900 office and amenities building in Packe [Street, St Albans. Only a lean-to attachment to the main high bay now serves the purpose for 300 staff at the M.E.D. yard north of Bealey Avenue. The situation has been examined by several councillors.
Under the proposal, a onestorey office building would be built along the yard’s Packe Street frontage. It would serve all workers on electricity mains, lines, and cables. It would be designed to support a second storey if that were ever needed. The building would also have a cafeteria. staff training room, toilets, and other facilities.
There would be. space for lawn and shrubs along Packe Street. Three existing houses owned by the M.E.D. would have to be demolished. The building would be paid for from this year’s operations surplus, which should result from much lower than expected peak loads last winter.
