Hotel plan for terminal
Wellington reporter Accommodation - starved Wellington may get a new hotel —■ standing in the harbour, as an extra floor to the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Oriental Bay. A proposal has been put to the Wellington Harbour Board which would put a 150-room hotel as a second floor on top of the existing wharf and terminal facilities, at a cost of about S3M.
Extra piling would be needed, but the hotel would put only an extra 3m on top of the existing structure and should scarcely affect the appearance of one of Wellington’s most attractive areas.
The new hotel would be associated with the James Cook Hotel, and it is anticipated that it could be completed within two years of receiving permission.
However, while the Harbcmr Board has yet to consider the proposal formally, its members already seem divided about the concept’s merits.
