New drill to tackle Hurunui boulders
A third drilling rig will be taken to the site of the proposed S4OM hydro-electric power station on the Hurunui River. Three weeks ago two drilling rigs were moved to the dam site to bore samples for geological and seismic tests. The new rig, which has a percussion drill, will be used to bore through large greywacke boulders just beneath the surface of the west bank of the river’s north branch. The general manager and chief engineer of the North Canterbury Electric-Power Board (Mr D. W. Harris) said yesterday the new rig would be moved on to the site next week. Board members will inspect the site today. According to Mr Harris the boulders have proved too hard for the other drills.’ In the meantime, the contractors working the drilling rigs would concentrate on boring through solid rock on the east bank, Mr Harris said. He estimated the test would take another six to seven weeks to complete. The dam site is on the north branch of the Hurunui River just above the junction with the south branch.
