Canty horse rep.
A Canterbury horse is one Ol two New Zealand representatives which will compete in the Australian dressage championships early next month at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney. The two horses chosen were Susan Talbot’s Singleton (Hawke’s Bay) and Margaret Journeaux’s Surrey (Southland). However, Singleton became unavailable through unsoundness and the trip was offered to the reserve horse, Sue Alleyne’s Johann Strauss (Canterbury). Johann Strauss, which was bred at Haldon Station, South Canterbury, is an attractive brown horse with excellent movement. He has been ridden through his dressage career in the last five years by Mrs Alleyne, who, when based in Auckland, received instruction first from Cheryl Monds and then at the Wills National Equestrian Centre from Lockie Richards, the resident national instructor.
Johann Strauss reached medium grade about two years ago. His mast recent wins were at Winchester, where he won two medium ciasses and was second in another. He was fourth in the South Canterbury - North Otago dressage championship. At the Otago dressage championships, he was second to Surrey in the medium and freestyle classes.
