PA Nelson . Mike Carran, of Hope, had a comfortable win in the 350 mm national standing chopping championship at Nelson. He won from a former Nelsonian, Les Gilsenan, now of Rangiora, with Mike Russell, of Christchurch, third. Mark Smith, of Kaikoura, took the national 275 mm jigg e r-b Ia r d championship ahead of Gilsenan and Roger Thain, of Christchurch. ' A highlight of the chopping carnival, run by the Nelson Bushcraft Club, was the team relay between Nelson-1 Marlborough and the visiting Penguin Alemen’s club, of Tasmania. The teams were block for block all the way and only two blows separated them at the finish, with Nelson-Marl- , borough the winners. The C. Griggs Shield was won by G. Hogg (Southland), the Rod Hughes Memorial Cup by J. H. Birchfield (West Coast), and the Transport Nelson Trophy and Odlins Trophy (most points on day) by P. Hahn (Richmond). A silver axe donated by the Tasmanian club was awarded to Birchfield.
