Amberley fair ewes bought for shipment to Rumania

About a third of the two-j tooth ewes offered at the Amberley ewe fair will go to Rumania. More than 5000; were bought for a shipment of sheep expected to leave; New Zealand about the middle of April. They will be mated before departure. There were 15,124 twotooths in the offering and the inquiry for sheep for overseas gave a boost to the market for these, a market which was considered a good one under present drought conditions and with values for wool and lambs being behind last season. 'This unusual interest added is2 or $3 to the market, the market for the better-class 1 sheep in particular being affected.

The market gained ground after it had been in progress for a time and moved ahead of recent Addington values, with even the average type of ewe showing some improvement.

Considering the season, the young ewes came forward in surprisingly good order but some of the sheep were showing the signs of , the dry spell and there was a tail of light ewes. On average, two-tooth ewes were back on last year by about $4.50 a head or some 29 per cent. Whereas 14 pens soid yesterday aver-j aged $15.50, 16 pens of the! same vendors’ sheep sold last year averaged just on $2O.

For the top sheep in the sale there was a good sale between $2O and $26. The best price this year, $26, was realised for a pen of big Corriedales from Blakely and McKenzie (Bel Hamid), who last year topped the sale at $3O. The same vendors sold another pen of 90 at $lB. P. H and D. Loughnan (Burrabogie) also received $24.40 for 70 and $lB2O for another 80.

Dovedale Farm (Amberley), which realised to $22.40 for 101, had one of the best pen averages of the day, three pens containing 285 sheep averaging $19.20. D. W. J. Gould (Glenmark) also sold 111 Corriedales at $21.20.

But good class ewes brought mainly from about $l7 to $2O, average $l4 to $l6, and light and plain down to about $lO.

Blythe Downs (Cheviot) j sent forward more than IOOOi young ewes and for 1056 in' six pens it had a pen aver-1 age of $18.53. Last year, the corresponding average fori seven pens was $24.20. J. J.i McLean (Cotswold) averaged' almost $18.50 for three pens! containing 288 sheep and I selling from $16.20 to| $19.80. For four pens with 393 sheep, I. L. Williams' ■ (Hidden Hills) also averaged! $18.05, compared with $23.50 ; last year for four pens. The consignment of sheep I for Rumania is the third to be contracted by Wrightson NMA, Ltd, and Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd. It is the result of some eight months negotiations, which have been complicated by the decline in the value of the I American dollar.

Both Mr J. V. Evans, New; Zealand livestock manager; < - Dalgety’s, and Mr H. D. Matson, New Zealand live-! stock manager of Wrighti son’s, attended the sale. Mr ! Matson has just returned from a wintry', snow-covered Rumania where he completed the negotiations and signed the contract. The two-tooth ewes in the consignment will include Romneys, but Corriedales will predominate; and be-> cause of its interest in the; Corriedale-producing areas of the country, Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. will also supply a proportion of the sheep. Some stud sheep of the two breeds will also be sent.

Mr Evans said that the sheep would be used in the improvement of the Rumanian flock in crossbreeding and in crossing with indigenous sheep. The fact that this further shipment was going was indicative of the adaptability of New Zealand sheep to Rumanian conditions, he said. The offering at Amberley also included 2692 four-year-old ewes, 7885 five-year-olds and 1470 four and five- : year-olds and annual-draft ewes, bringing the total on I offer to 27,171, only a little 'behind last year. For four-year-olds, values I were also back on last year Iby about $4.50 a head or 261 !per cent. Again they were .considered to have sold reasonably well under the conditions.

While the general run of sales were between about $lO and $l2. the better pens in the selection brought from about $l3 to $15.10.

J. J. McLean, who realised up to $23.20 a year ago, sold 299 Corriedales yesterday at $l5 to $15.10 and Overton and Foster (Raumati), 222 at $14.20.

For comparable five-year-olds there was an average decline of about $4 or 25 per cent on last year’s fair. These sold mainly from about $9 to $l2, with the best up to $14.80. Overton and Foster received from $l4 to $14.80 for 380 Corriedales with 250 at the top money; T. H. CrOft (The Rock) sold 221 at $14.50: and A. J. Sloss (Glenlake), 387 at $14.40. A few four and five-year-jolds arid annual-draft ewes iranged from $10.20 to !$ 13.20.

A pleasing feature of the sale was the steady inquiry.' Few pens failed to find a buyer, in spite of the big i offering, which was disposed' of in a little more than five; hours. The sale not onlyj drew sheep from a wide; area now that the two Amberley fairs of earlier days have been amalgamated, but there was again a gallery of buyers from widely separated parts from Mid-Canter-bury to North Canterbury. Mid-Canterbury buyers again took a lot of sheep, sales being made to Ashburton and Rakaia, and in addition sheep went to Ellesmere, Dunsandel, Aylesbury, Darfield Rangiora and Che-

viot as well as the local district. Details of sales were, all sheep being Corriedale or haifbred:— TWO-TOOTH EWES Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, sold on account of:— ' R. J.
