Pure Steel has fine win
NZPA Melbourne The Western Australian champion pacer, Pure Steel, threw out a strong warning on Saturday night to the too New Zea land entrants and the rest of Australia’s best that he alread' has a strong grip on next month’s Inter-Dominion Championship. In a slashing run in th* $60,000 Hunter Cup at Moonee Valley Pure Steel proved himself in world class with a brilliant staying effort In winning the 2800 m prestige race. Bookmakers reacted sharpie to his three-metre win bv installing him a 7 to 4 favourite for the Inter-Dominion Final on March ilB. Saturday’s win took Pure Steel’s stake earnings to $351 -515. He has only been out of a place nine times in his 60 starts.
Phil Coulsen, the regular driver and trainer of Pure Steel was not able to drive the horse on Saturday as he was under suspension. His substitute was the Melbourne driver, Ted Demmler, who knows the champion well and won behind him here last season. Coulsen will be back to team up with Pure Steel for the Inter-Dominions, which open on March 4.
