Wool steady at Invercargill
PA Invercargill Values for fleece wool were generally unchanged on Timaru rates on the first day of the two-day wool sale at Invercargill yesterday. Crossbred skirtings were 2| per cent dearer and oddments sold in sellers’ favour. Lambs’ wool was unchanged. The catalogues contained 20,100 bales, of which 77 per cent was fleece wool, 7 per cent was lambs’ wool, the balance, oddments. The fleece wool opened up showing an over-all better standard of colour than
would normally be associated with this sale because of the dry conditions experienced this summer. Over-all length was good but the usual tenderness was evident, as was a degree of cotting. The lambs’ fleece was generally high-yielding and in most cases fairly well picked. Any lots that were not were discounted, with most being 3in to 3|in in length although the latershorn lots were slightly longer. A premium is paid for the longer lots because of their suitability for combing. The main competition
came from Eastern and Western Europe with moderate support from the Middle East and Bradford. The Wool Board gave limited support to the market by bidding on 1.5 per cent of the offering and having 32 bales (0.2 per cent) passed to it. Official range of prices:
