Italians to run in N.Z. series
A leading 800 metres runner, Carlo Grippo, is one of three Italians who have been confirmed as late entries for the four New Zealand international track and field meetings this month.
His inclusion in the Pan Am-South Pacific Television series should strengthen the middle-distance events, as Grippo is the present world indoor record-holder for the 800 m with a time of Imin 46sec.
Grippo is obviously not yet at peak form, however, as he was well back in third place behind John Walker and John
Higham (Australia) over 1000 metres at the international meeting in Brisbane last week-end. Also in the Italian team is a 5000 m runner, Luigi Zarcone, and a women’s 1500 m specialist, Gabriella Dorio. The latter has a best time of 4min 6s for the distance and was a finalist at the Montreal Olympics last year. The series gets under way with a meeting at Wellington on January 18 and continues with meetings at Christchurch (January 21), Dunedin (January 25) and Auckland (January 28).
