Action council 'dismayed'

The Native Forests Action Council is dismayed about proposals announced last Thursday to log native forest close to the Okarito Lagoon in South Westland. The national chairman of the Native Forests Action Council (Miss Gwenny Davis) said the Forest Service seemed to have been “quite unmoved” by two years of representation from conservationists seeking better protection for the lagoon and its immediate surrounds. “The Forest Service does not seem to appreciate that Okarito is one of the most special and sacred places in the whole of New Zealand. It is not just another place to go to get logs from,” Miss Davis said. The delicate ecological balance of the Okarito Lagoon could be upset by logging of its catchment, especially if logging penetrated too close to the lagoon. “We seek national park status for the lagoon and its immediate surrounds, together with an . important forest area to the south of the lagoon,” Miss Davis said.
