Flourmill to be restored
Clark’s flourmill at Maheno, near Oamaru, will be restored by the Historic Places Trust, which bought the mill at auction earlier this year. Restoration would be a long and expensive job, but would help towards a better understanding of New Zealand’s industrial and farming development, said the direstor of the trust (Mr John Daniels). Research on the mill buildings has begun. The most important buildings at the site are considered to be the main mill with the milling machinery, the oatmeal-making building, and two stone millers houses. Particular attention would be paid to retaining the original character of the mill, Mr Daniels said. The Ministry of Works and Development has prepared drawings and a consulting engineering firm is preparing a scheme and estimate of costs for the restoration. In the meantime the property has been leased to an Oamaru transport firm.
