Mayor on air
The Mayor of Wellington (Mr Michael Fowler) had obtained pledges of more than $16,000 when he finished his 24-hour stint behind the microphone on Radio Windy yesterday morning. He went home tired but in good spirits after answering more than 200 'telephone calls. Among the pledges was one of $12,500 from the department store, Kirkcaldie and Stains. The “Marathon” was staged to raise money for Wellington’s proposed new civic centre. The target for it is S3M. More than $1,165,000 has been received in cash so far and work is expected to begin in six months.
