Centre told to ‘get off chuff’
The Paparua County Council has refused a request for money to help the Arts Centre establish a charitable trust to run the centre.
The University of Canterbury is prepared to give the site to an approved Arts Centre charitable trust provided that the metropolitan councils will guarantee financial support of $50,000 for the next five years. The money would help the centre with essential capital projects, said its manager (Mr B. Riley). “It is time these people got off their chuffs and stopped asking the ratepaver to do their work for them,” said Cr A. Y. Shuker. An official said the council was constantly being asked by organisations to support their projects; the load was always bn the ratepayer. A councillor countered the view that the Arts Council should “get off its chuff” — the centre had done a lot to help itself, he said. The council was asked to provide a share of about $6890 each year for five years.
