Plantations to stay out of bounds
The McLeans Island plantations—battered by the big gale of August 1, 1975—wi1l be out of bounds to the public until October next year. The regional water board has decided that because of the extreme fire risk, and dangerous conditions in areas of windthrown timber, people will, not be allowed into plantation areas unless they have written permission from the secretary of the board (Mr E. R. Wood). The public has been barred from the area since October, 1975. Work had been going on since the gale to clear the damage, but there was still a risk to the public, said Mr Wood. When open, the McLean Island plantation is a popular place for picnickers and motor-cyclists—a rural setting close to Christchurch.
