Battle in Rome
NZPA Rome Gunfire and tear-gas filled the narrow streets of Rome on Saturday as Leftists protesting the closing of three of their offices fought the police from behind burning barricades.
Fighting also erupted in Turin and the southern town of Lecce, where gunfire wounded two young demonstrators. There were no immediate reports of injuries in Rome.
The demonstrators were protesting the police’s closing of three offices of the Autonomous Workers’ Group, accused of involvement in growing political violence in Italy.
Rome demonstrators, dispersed by tear-gas barrages at several points, regrouped, pushed parked cars and buses across the Corso Vittorio to form a barricade and set several vehicles on fire.
