Y.M.C.A. leads basketball

Y.M.C.A.-Lichfield appears a likely winner of the Canterbury A grade men’s basketball summer league competition with one round remaining. It gained a surprisingly comfortable 59-41 victory over Y.M.C.A., its sister team, in the sixth round and is now the only unbeaten team. Before the match, the two teams shared the lead.

The younger Y.M.C.A. team made a great start and ied, 25-211, at half-time. However, it tired rapidly in the second spell and as the pressure went on it collapsed completely. The architect of victory for Y.M.C.A.-Lichfield was the New Zealand trialist, Ed Manco. who I scored 22. The side was’ also strengthened by the first appearrance of the summer of the former New Zealand centre, Hugh Dimock. He scored 16. Jaks-Old Boys moved ahead of Soulseekers in a close game and now seem certain of third place.

Mairehau is the only unbeaten team in the womens A grade after beating University, 47-34. Mairehau made a splendid start to lead, 24-17, at half-time and continued to edge ahead in the second half. Results were: Men
