Vietnamese immigrants

Sir, — I wholeheartedly agree with P. J. Alley that Vietnamese refugees should not be allowed into New Zealand. Everv one of them is a living witness to the bankruotcv of socialism and loss of civil liberties under communist rule and, as such, they hinder the local comrades in their crusade for socialism in New Zealand. Fortunately, more advanced socialist countries had time to build up the Wall, the Iron, and the Bamboo curtains: but Vietnam still did not manaee to seal off the borders. New Zealand should help them with monetary aid to achieve this task in the near future. In the meantime. P. J. Alley should let us know how many New Zealand workers voted with their feet against our crisis-ridder capitalist system by emigrating to socialist countries. — Yours, etc., L. FIELD. November 10, 1977. Sir, — On behalf of the Vietnamese Association in Christchurch. I would like to express our thanks to people in Christchurch for the warm and kind reception that they have been giving to our refugee compatriots. We thank all who responded

tremendously to our job appeal in August to raise funds for the refugees. We shall always be thankful for the tireless, voluntary efforts by members of the National Council of Churches, the Holy Name Seminary, and the Red Cross, to teachers at the Christchurch Technical Institute, doctors and nurses in the Department of Health, and to many others for helping these displaced people in their first steps towards resettlement in this country'. We sincerely hope that with this increase of Vietnamese population in New Zealand, mutual understanding, as well as social and cultural exchanges. will find more opportunities to develop than they have in the past. — Yours, etc.. H. V. TRAN. Refugee Resettlement Committee, Canterbury Centre, Vietnamese Association in N.Z. November 10, 1977.
