New post office for Brighton
Parliamentary reporter
A new post office at New Brighton has been approved, and tenders for its construction will be called soon, according to the PostmasterGeneral (Mr Wilkinson). Designed by Mr T. J. Ibbetson, of Christchurch, the single-storey building will be of about 450 sq. m. It will be built on the site of the present building in Seaview Road, and to enable services to be maintained while it is built the new building will be in three stages. The first stage of the project will include a postmaster’s room, an interview room, a boiler room, and staff amenities at the rear of the existing building. Stage two will involve the demolition of the rear portion of the existing building and the erection of a new portion providing for new counters, clerical room, and temporary private-box accommodation.
In the third stage the front portion of the existing building will be demolished and additional counters, the main entrance vestibule, mailroom, private boxes, posting-boxes, and public telephones built.
Public access to the counters will also be available from Beresford Street.
