Climber falls, breaks legs
A Christchurch youth broke both his legs when he fell 30ft while climbing at Castle Rock, on the Summit Road, yesterday morning.
Paul Coleman, aged 18, of 27 Samuel Street, Hoon Hay, was climbing with four companions on Castle Rock. He was scaling a sheer face when one of his
companions warned him that a safety pinion had pulled out of the rock.
When he attempted to climb up, and out of the situation, he fell 30ft to the foot of the face. The accident occurred about 11 a.m. but because of the steepness it took policemen nearly four hours to get Mr Coleman to a waiting ambulance.
He was strapped into a Neil Robinson stretcher, often used in mountain rescue work, and manoeuvred downhill using ropes. Mr Coleman suffered a compound fracture of the right leg and a broken left leg. His condition was not available from the Christchurch Hospital last evening.
