S.A. tour talks
NZPA staff correspondent Toulouse The final steps to call off the Springboks’ scheduled tour of Britain next year could be taken on the eve of the All Blacks’ second test against France in Paris next week. The South Africans are down to tour all four Home Unions in the 1978-79 season — their first visit to Britain since the stormy tour in 1969-70. Discussions on the tour — and on Scotland’s scheduled visit to South Africa next year — took place in Paris three weeks ago when leading rugby officials from
Britain and South Africa attended the French federation’s seventy-fifth anniversary match. The president of the South African Rugby Board (Dr Danie Craven) and his No. 2, Professor Fritz Eloff, were both there and Professor Eloff was quoted afterwards as saying: “We now accept there is no tour of Britain next year and we are isolated.” Professor Eloff is due back in Paris for the All Blacks’ second test, and he is expected to meet British officials on the eve of the test to finalise the details of the cancellation.
