Top field in 15-mile race

Nearly all Canterbury’s leading distance athletes are in the record field of more than 100 for the Lion Breweries annual 15-mile race which starts at sp,m. this evening. Frank Brookes (Technical) seems the logical selection to take fastest time off the back mark and he is likely to improve on the record he set last year of Ihr 19min 48s for the run from Gamblin’s Road to Redcliffs and return.

The race is organised by the St Martins club. The handicapper, Mr Alex Cook, will need all his skill to sort out realistic marks for the talented runners contesting the other placings. John Sheddan, Peter McLauchlan and John Argue (Olympic), Merv Austin (St Martins) and Cam McLennan (Ashburton) could all be in contention.

So could Vic Sykes (Christchurch) and lan Fal-

vey (Umaru) who will fight out veteran honours Gary Clarke (Olympic), Brent Cowie (University) and a former winner of the South African marathon championship John Mcßrearty (United). One of the most interesting entries is that of Peter Cant, an orthopaedic specialist at Christchurch Hospital, who has a number of times completed the famous 54-mile International Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. It is the first appearance of Cant in a race in New Zealand. As usual there is a record entry from veteran (over 40) runners as well as a record field of women athletes.

Almost the only top Canterbury distance men not entered are Colin Hicks (Toe H) and Mel Radcliffe (New Brighton) who are in Auckland to run the Choysa International marathon tomorrow.
