Shooter killed in helicopter
PA Dunedin A Te Anau deer shooter was killed instantly when a Hughes 500 helicopter crashed on a beach in a remote part of Fiordland late on Saturday afternoon. He was John Unsworth, single, of Te Anau, formerly of Rotorua. The helicopter pilot, James Schewan, of Te Anau, escaped without injury. The accident occurred al tout 5.30 pxn. on Saturday at Big River, east of Puysegur Point, in the far south of Fiordland. The police said that the pilot was attempting to turn the helicopter in strong
winds when a deer being carried on a strop underneath struck the tail rotor. The helicopter crashed on to the beach, killing the passenger. The Te Anau police did not learn that the helicopter was missing until Sunday afternoon. A rescue party of police and staff from Alpine Helicopters, Ltd, left Te Anau at 3.30 p.m. The accident is the second in less than a month involving a Hughes 500 belonging to Alpine Helicopters. On October 7 two men were killed when their helicopter truck a flying fox cable and fell into the Waiau River near Te Anau.
