No surprises in puppy race
By
BOB SCHUMACHER
Since the inception of the Cardigan Moss Cup for puppies, there has been a sequence of surprise results, but there was nothing Unpredictable in the running of the race at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s equaiisator meeting last evening I at Queen Elizabeth II Park. The favoured runners were the Utter sisters, Roaming Kilty and Katherine Moran, and they ran up to expectations, with Roaming Kilty winning the 3100 first prize and Katherine Moran finishing runner-up. The three fancied runners, Roaming Kilty, Katherine Moran and Rosie Knows, bounced out best and they hit the first bend almost in line. Roaming Kilty, with the advantage of the inside running, led into the back straight and from that point the first three dogs never changed positions. Roaming Kilty, by the established Irish sire, Ballykilty, from the Australian bitch. Roaming toslta. was never in danger over
the last 200 m and she won easily from her sister, Katherine Moran. Rosie Knows (Chief Zero—Rosearna) chased hard throughout and was comfortably third. The winner ran the 590 m in the respectable time of 35.925ec.
The race of the night was the open event between the brilliant youngster, Smokey Hobbs, winner of eight of Ms last nine races, and the outstanding bitch, Miss Valley Inn, which has just returned from Australia to try for the New Zealand championship at the next meeting.
The two brindle dogs were a class above their opposition as they fought out a great speed duel. Smokey Hobbs, from the inside draw, shaded Miss Valley Inn into the first turn and the two brilliant chasers had it to themselves after 100 m.
Smokey Hobbs never looked like stopping and the Old Hobbs dog forged to a great two-length victory over Miss Valley Inn, which should improve Immeasurably on the run. The winner ran the 590 m in the tremendous time of 35.365ec, only 0.04 outside the
track record. There was eight lengths back to the third dog. Jetsetter, which did wel lin her first test against open company.
