Strike to end soon?

PA Auckland Strike action by Storemen and packers in Auckland and Tauranga will continue today in spite of a Government threat to deregister their union.

However, a concerted effort to resolve the dispute was made yesterday, and a return to work soon is highly likely. The Auckland Storemen and Packers’ Union took the precaution of withdrawing between $25,000 and $30,000 from its bank accounts yesterday in case of deregistration.

Moves were also made to sign union property such as cars over to neutral ownership. - The president of the Federation of Labour (Sir Thomas Skinner) acted as an intermediary between the union and the Auckland Employers’ Association yesterday, and reached an understanding that bargaining on the Auckland district storemen and packers’ award would resume as soon as possible — probably next week.
