Acupuncture deflated
PA Wellington Legislation introduced in Parliament earlier this year to control the practice of acupuncture has been given the kiss of death by the House’s social services select committee.
. Reporting back to Parliament on Wednesday evening after hearing submissions from interested parties, the committee’s chairman, Mr G. P. Downie (Nat., Pakuranga) said the committee had decided unanimously that the Health Amendment Bill should not proceed. The bill sought to restrict the performance of acupuncture by ensuring that it be undertaken only by qualified persons under the supervision of a registered doctor, dentist, or physiotherapist. However, Mr Downie said that the submissions, including those from acupuncturists, had persuaded the committee that the restrictions would be “unduly onerous” and could have resulted in the reduction of acupuncture sendees provided by responsible practitioners.
