An Okie from Plains
President Carter has proclaimed October “Country Music Month,” saying the music born in his Southern homeland "embraces the joys, sorrows, experiences, and hopes of daily life.”
In a letter to the Country Music Association based in Nashville, Tennessee, Mr Carter recalled his own attachment to country music. “As a native of rural America, I gew up with country music and join with great enthusiasm with all those who celebrate country music month,” Mr Carter said. “Anyone who has spent time living or working on a farm or spent time touring the small towns and rural areas has learned to appreciate the musical legacy of this part of our country. It echoes the greatness, goodness, and diligence of hard-working men and women.”
