Printing works to close
Sixteen printers and a few other staff at Alex Cowan and Sons, Ltd, in Ferry Road will be made redundant in the next few months because the company is transferring its printing work to its Wellington factory.
In a statement to the workers, the company said it had decided to consolidate all its manufacturing on its site at. Tawa.
The costs of maintaining two separate works had risen and the present economic climate had helped prompt the decision the statement said.
Envelope equipment would probably be removed from Christchurch by Christmas and bindery equipment installed at fawa by the end of February. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Printing Trades Union (Mr N. Hams) said it was apparent that the company had run down its staff in Christchurch recently as there had been twice as many printers employed previously.
Redundancy negotiations were proceeding, he said. Mr Harris said that some workers had been with the company in Christchurch for more than 20 years and the chances of many of getting other jobs in the industry in Christchurch were “pretty slim.”
