Pilots to strike as hijacking protest

NZPA-Reuter London

Leaders of world airline pilots yesterday called for a 48-hour strike from Tuesday to back demands for a special debate in the United Nations General Assembly on the problem of hijacking. A statement issued by the International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations said: “This is the last chance to fix hijacking problems.”

The association expressed outrage over the killing of the captain of a hijacked West German airliner and urged governments to call a conference aimed at stopping air piracy.

The Australian Federation of Airline Pilots advised Qantas and the domestic airlines late yesterday that its members would stop work as part of the world strike.

A Qantas spokesman said full details of the effect of the Australian strike were not known, but all flights leaving Australia were expected to be cancelled.

The New Zealand Airline Pilots’ Association executive will today consider joining the stoppage next week.
