Arafat call for aid
NZPA-Reuter Beirut A major flare-up of fighting in the war-torn south of Lebanon threatened to involve other Arab States yesterday after the Palestinian leader, Mr Yasser Arafat, sent urgent appeals to them for help. The Palestine news agency, W.A.F.A. reported that Mr Arafat sent messages to Arab leaders on Saturday warning them of the consequences of the escalation and urging them to “assume their historic responsibility.” Informed Palestinian sources said this was a phrase used when the Palestinian movement was under attack, and was a call for immediate assistance. At least 24 people have been reported killed and 62 wounded in three days of sustained artillery duels and heavy ground fighting between the Palestinian-Leftist alliance and Israeli-backed Rightist forces. Observers said the sudden escalation would be a serious set-back for plans to implement a peace agreement worked out by Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian leaders last July.
