Thousands cheer Tito

NZPA-Reuter Peking] China laid on a massivej welcome for President Tito of Yugoslavia when he ar- ] rived on his first visit to Peking. The 85-vear-old statesman was met at Peking Airport by the Chinese Communist Party chairman (Mr Hua Kuo-feng), the successor of Mao Tse-tung, and numerous other party and State leaders. Tens of thousands of people lined the Avenue of Eternal Tranquility and the Square of Heavenly Peace in the biggest reception the Chinese capital has witnessed for years. There was unprecedented security on the road leading from the airport, with all local traffic being turned away.

Yugoslav officials said the President would spend a rei laxed first day in the Chinese capital. The only item on his itinerary was a State banquet in the Great Hall of the People. The Yugoslav President is held in high esteem in China as a strong leader with the nerve to stand up to Moscow, although in the 1950 s Yugoslavia was denounced by Peking as the 'first of the revisionists.
