Unite to end junta — Brandt

NZPA-Reuter Rotterdam The former West German Chancellor, Mr Willy Brandt, has called on all opponents of the ruling junta in Chile to sink their differences and co-operate to bring an end to the regime there. Mr Brandt told a threeday international conference in Rotterdam on the future of Chile that it was essential for all serious democratic forces in Chile and outside to pool their efforts. Mr Brandt is president of the Socialist International, co-organisers with the Dutch Labour Party of the conference. He is also chairman of the meeting, which is financed by the Dutch Government.

“Without a reasonable degree of consensus between the different democratic forces of Chile, the wait for democracy will, I fear, be a long one,” he told the opening session of the conference.

The former Swedish Prime Minister, Mr Olof Palme, sent a statement to the meeting describing the coup which brought the Chilean junta to power in 1973 as “one of the most evil in the history of Latin America.”
