Trees doomed

Most trees on the median strip in Bealey Avenue and Fitzgerald Avenue are very old and beyond recovery. They should be removed and replaced in groups, the Director of Parks and Recreation (Mr H. G. Gilpin) told the Christchurch City Counci lyesterday. Most of the trees were planted in the late 1880 s. There had been little success in retarding their “health” problems.

The former policy had been to plant a new tree in the same place as an old one, but this had resulted in failure or slow growth because of intense competition for root space and sunlight from older trees. Mr Gilpin said a complete planting plan for both avenues would be prepared. New trees would be more widely spaced. Removing groups of trees would allow depleted soil to be replaced over an adequate area.
