Competitions at Ashburton

One hundred and ten classes had been judged by last evening in the first two days of the Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival. The speech section fi-. nished on the first day. Monday, and the judge (Mrs L. Moore, of Christchurch); commended the high standard of speech of Ashburton' entrants. In this section main awards included the Ashburton Competitions Society’s’ scholarship, which wasj shared by Eilish Moran’ (Christchurch) and Denise Chisnall (Ashburton). This award was for mostpoints gained by competitors' 14 years and under in the ' classes for own selection, •nd test pie'-es. A six-year-old. rhyme, “When I was a Bachelor,” in the under-eight; class. Mrs Moore said he' had a great future as an en- 1 tertainer. In the dancing section the iciasses completed so far in-i elude the championship tap dance for girls aged 12 and under 15 years. This was . won by Leola Goodall, with Leigh Patrick second, and Julie Sinatos ’hird. The festival has attracted ; 1970 entries, and competi-1 tors have come from as far) afield as Wanganui and Invercargill. It was officially' opened by the Mayor (Mr D. O. Digby) who *ommended I the society for its continued efforts in encouraging the artistic and related talents of many hundreds of young' people in the festivals each; year. The competitions will have morning, afternoon, ‘ and evening sessions each’ day, finishing with a demonstration concert on Friday evening.
