New power line to Kaikoura
Parliamentary Reporter The Government has approved the construction of a new 66kv point of supply at Kaikoura and of a 66kv sin g 1 e-circuit pole-trans-mission line from Culverden to Kaikoura, for commissioning in 1980. The estimate for the work is SI.SM.
At present Kaikoura is supplied from Waipara by a 118 km-long North Canterbury Power Board 33kv feeder. After commissioning of the new substation at Kaikoura, supply to the town and to areas south towards Cheviot will be greatly improved. The new transmission line mainly will follow the inland route (State highway 70) to Kaikoura. This route is remote from the coast and would not suffer the outages that result from the highly corrosive, exposed coastal environment.
The line will be away from the highway and, where necessary, helicopters will be used to lift materials.
