Govt tie problem for youth group?

PA Wellington. The National Youth Council has the problem developing of how to work within the Government and yet remain a pressure group on the outside, says the retiring executive officer of the council (Mr G. Woolford). At the beginning of 1974. when he had been appointed to the position, the council had been regarded by the Government as the “official” voice of New Zealand youth. This had not amounted to i u c h . Things had changed. “Over the last three years and a half, we have been much more recognised by the Government and drawn more into the whole decision-making process,” he said. “We are now reoresented on a

number of more important committees." Although there were obviovs benefits from their improved working relationship. the problem was that this could affect the council’s ability to act as a pressure group on behalf of members. “The consensus of the council is that we must be careful . . . we must remain the representative of youth groups.” said Mr Woolford. His main reason for leaving was that he felt he was becoming too old for the job. A new person would bring new ideas.
