New poison tested

PA Wellington The Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young) on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre) confirmed in Parliament a •elevision report that Government research scientists were testing a new poison, reported to be three to four times more toxic than 1080, as an alternative to 1080 for killing opossums and rabbits.

This giant kiwi, carved on a chalk hill on the Salisbury Plains, southern I England, nearly 60 years ago by New Zealand troops, has recently been ' given a face-lift by British soldiers. The bird, which covers an acre and a i half, is 420 ft high. It was cut out by a company of New Zealand engineers when they were stationed at Bulhani Camp, now known as Kiwi Barracks, during the First World War. The British soldiers have removed some I grass which had grown over the years, and put down wed killer to prevent further growth.
