‘Travel by bus cheapest’
PA Auckland. New Zealanders must learn to use buses for long-distance travel to save money and valuable energy resources, according to the chairman and managing director of Mobil Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, (Mr G. Duncan).
He told delegates at the Bus and Coach Association conference that longdistance bus travel was most economical and deserved the support of the public and the Government.
The cost of fuel for a 32-passenger bus travelling between Auckland and Wellington was 89.5 c a passenger. However, fuel for a 2000 cu cm car, carying four people worked out at $4.38 a person. Fuel consumption per person on the 107-seater Silver Star worked out at $3.04 each, while jet fuel for a Boeing 737 was $3.78 a person. “It is in the best interests of the country if people are encouraged to use buses,” said Mr Duncan. “Oil producers can meet the increasing demand only until the mid--19905.”
Bus operators had to overcome the discomfort most people associated with bus travel. “It won’t be easy — I can’t remember the last time I travelled on a bus,” he said.
