Settlers’ names sought
A special Christchurch City Council committee wants more help in identifying settlers in Canterbury before December 16, 1850. Councillor Helen Garrett, said the committee’s work on this subject was still “at a very early stage,” and more unpublished source material was needed from the public. Such material — family diaries and letters — could show names of persons who had lived in Canterbury before the First Four Ships arrived. So far, more than 600 European names have already been listed and are being verified. The committee wants to include names of all settlers who lived in the Canterbury blocks, even briefly, before 1850.
. When the project is finished more than a year from now, all names will be recorded in a format including dates of arrival and brief biographical details.
Help has been offered by the Canterbury Public Library’s archivist, the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the National Archives. Research on Maori tribes in Canterbury before 1850 is also going on, and a Cathedral Square plaque has been proposed to record their settlement.
