Easy trials winner may not get race start
The ease with which Jipcho won a 1200 m sprint in race trials at Riccarton yesterday would have assured him of earnest attention in his next start at a totalisator meeting.
His Riccarton ownertrainer Ivan Thomas had hopes his chance would come in the White Stone Handicap at Oamaru next Monday, but his Soveriegn Prince gelding is only fifth on the list of reserves for that race, and at this distance a start seems unlikely. Jipcho won the sprint for class 1,2 and 3 houses at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s trials yesterday by two lengths from the former northerner. Laurence Charles. Rosie’s Boy came from the back in a field of 10 for third half a length back, and Thomas Mellay was a length away fourth. Laurence Charles was flattered by the margin separating him from Jipcho, for the winner went to the post under a good hold. Early in the race he accelerated brilliantly and before half way he led by about six lengths. Rosie’s Boy will race at 1200 metres in the last race on the card at Oamaru. Brent Lee has been engaged to ride him.
Ruby Tuesday, runner-up in three of her four starts, made another claim for favouritism in the Glenmoa Maiden Stakes by winning a 1600-metre event for all classes on a heavy track yesterday. Ruby Tuesday was in front inside the first 200 metres and won under a hold by two lengths from Joint Effort, which was not extended to finish four lengths clear of the third place-getter. Golden Gate.
Two events for classes 4 and 5 and maidens yesterday also offered form pointers for the Oamaru meeting next Monday. Double Vision, an attractive Old Soldier filly from Ron McCann’s stable, won narrowly but well over 1200 metres in an encouraging lead-up trial for the Tria! Maiden Stakes No 1, at Oamaru.
Double Vision won by a head from Mrs Ippi, which goes to Oamaru for the Trial Maiden Stakes No. 2.
Young Kelly showed he is well forward by finishing close at hand fourth after showing sharp speed to take an early lead. He was not bustled in the straight, and this run will bring him in for some attention for the
