North Island trials

Special correspondent Wanganui Prince Lee looked set for a successful spring campaign when he registered a fast time at Wanganui yesterday morning in his first serious test since resuming. Working on the soft No. 1 grass, Prince Lee galloped down the back from the 1200 m to the 600 m in 38.5 sec. Admittedly, the section is the fastest on the Wanganui track, but Prince Lee was doing his work well. He may tackle the Robinson Handicap at Foxton as a prelude to the Wanganui Guineas-Slevewright Stakes double at Wanganui next month.

Tria! Bid. which has been freshened since falling in heavy ground at Marton, worked kindly with Samsa over 800 m in 53sec, the last 600 m in 39sec. If the ground is reasonably good, Trial Bld could win at New Plymouth this week-end.

Murray Gold was three lengths clear of fellow hunter Hensellte after 1000 m In Imin 12sec, the last 600 m taking 42sec. Shah d’Or looked set for a bold effort at New Plymouth by heading Cohen at the end of 800 m In 52.8 sec, the last 600 m in 39.8 sec. Special correspondent Hastings It is going to take a good horse to beat Lavaro next time the gelding goes to the races.

This was spelled out at the Hastings track yesterday morn-

ing when the Alvaro four-.vear-old turned in a slashing trial with his stablemate No Way. Lavaro and No Way are expected to step out next at the Foxton meeting on Saturday week. They were both winners at the recent Hawke’s Bay meeting and have thrived since. Work took place on the plough and No. 1 grass and both tracks provided excellent footing. Lavaro and No Way worked In from the 1600 m peg on the plough. They were keen to go and had built up to quite a speed bv the time they hit the 1000 m. They came from there In Imin 4.9 sec, with Lavaro going clear by a length over the final stages. He was timed the last 800 m in 51.7 sec and the final 600 m In 39sec. This time was easily the fastest of the morning over 1000 m. Special correspondent Palmerston North Garth Ivil will go north tomorrow with a likely looking team for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty meetings. He will start his campaign at Te Kapa on Saturday where Ragham is engaged in the Foxbridge Plate. Saso, Lutetia. Zareg and Kajl are also engaged at Waikato. Mr Million and Ngapunawai are likely to resume at Tauranga. Working, on the plough, which was in surprisingly good order. Ragham and Stylish Sovereign

cut out 1000 m in Imin 4.6 sec, the last 600 m in 39.65ec Raghem has thrived since his trip to Rlccar ton. Mr Million and Surrey Park completed 1000 m tn Imin 3.4 sec. the last 600 m In 38.4 sec. Mr Mil lion is improving with even gallop. He could make a bold bid at Tauranga.
